APV and VVSA: How YouTube Shorts Decides
By Yash Khanna, CEO, Clipt
Explains the two metrics that drive YouTube Shorts distribution for clippers: APV, Average Percentage Viewed, and VVSA, Viewed vs Swiped Away. APV targets scale inversely with length, with 110 to 130 percent ideal for a 15 to 20 second Short, 100 to 110 percent at 20 to 30 seconds, 90 to 100 percent at 30 to 40 seconds, and 80 percent or above at 40 to 59 seconds. APV can exceed 100 percent because viewers rewatch, which is one of the strongest possible signals. VVSA measures how many viewers stay rather than instantly swiping away, and should sit at 80 percent or above; below roughly 70 percent a Short struggles to reach larger audiences, showing up as 10K or 30K view jail. Engagement is secondary on Shorts and follows naturally from strong APV and VVSA. Includes a diagnosis for Shorts stuck between 10K and 30K views despite good content, where decent APV combined with weak VVSA points to a hook problem rather than a content problem.
