How the Instagram Reels Algorithm Actually Works
By Yash Khanna, CEO, Clipt
Explains how Instagram distributes Reels for clippers. A new Reel goes to roughly 130 to 170 people first, and during that initial push watch time is effectively the only metric being measured, unlike TikTok where engagement counts from the start. Two outcomes follow: strong watch time and the Reel gets pushed further, at which point likes, saves and shares begin to matter, or weak watch time and Instagram kills the Reel at around 130 to 170 views. The minimum target is 9 seconds or more of average watch time, and consistently hitting 12 seconds or more inside a less saturated niche makes going viral extremely likely. Once a Reel is being pushed, the engagement ratios to watch are a like to view ratio around 1:12 or lower and a save to view ratio around 1:70 or lower, where lower is stronger.
